With summer fast approaching there’s plenty of emerging musical talent looking to make a name for themselves. Out of the many acts trying to get their name out, Green Knuckle Material hailing from New Brunswick NJ are off to a promising start with the release of their EP Back To Your Roots. Their latest EP is a strong showcase for their eclectic sound which contains elements of ALT-rock, reggae, hip-hop and early 2000’s with a fresh style and flair all their own. As a band, Green Knuckle Material are energetic and exuberant performers and that energy and charisma is undeniably enjoyable to hear. Opening track “Childhood” is a nostalgic piece of rock and hip-hop with a ska flavor thrown in that while catchy and upbeat on the surface contains quite a bit of depth as well. In terms of subject matter, Green Knuckle Material explore themes of growing up, identity, finding yourself and relationships, all with a sincere honest and comic perspective that feels unique and genuinely refreshing.
The diversity of the band’s range can be found on track “Rebels On The Run” which is a surprising mix of anthem-sized rock mixed with soul a combination the band manages to pull off more than effectively. The band’s positive and uplifting motto can be found in it’s soaring chorus and lead vocalist Daniel Kee has a strong vocal presence that’s commanding and confident. The EP manages to strike a nice balance of the relatable such as on the 3rd and final track “Go That Way” which offers insightful lyrics along with strong melodies, tight hooks, and dynamic arrangements. As an overall listening experience, Green Knuckle Material’s Back To Your Roots is an organic, original and hugely satisfying debut full of heart, wit and plenty of ambition and energy to spare.
In terms of production, songwriting, and presentation Green Knuckle Material indicate a passion and enthusiasm and humanity that’s truly welcome. There’ll no doubt be plenty of up and coming acts this summer but Green Knuckle Material are surely going to be getting some attention. It looks like these roots are looking intact after all. Keep rocking on boys!
